Kimi Raikkonen - 9th: "It wasn't the easiest qualifying session after a weekend which hasn't been the easiest so far either. Yesterday it was difficult at times to find the balance with the car and I found that again today. This morning it felt good and we didn't do too bad in free practice, but we didn't quite get it right this afternoon. My lap wasn't great, but it's a long race so we'll just have to see what we can do tomorrow."

 

Romain Grosjean - 11th: "It's obviously disappointing to miss out on Q3 but it's just one of those things. There weren't any issues with the car, we just tried to be a little too brave by doing just one run and unfortunately it didn't pay off. On the positive side, we've found a lot of performance this weekend compared to the first three races and our pace on the prime tyres in Q1 looked very strong. We qualified in similar positions last year and came away with a double podium, so it's still all to play for."

Kimi Raikkonen - 2nd: "You're never really happy if you don't win, but I suppose second place is as close as you can get. I drove to the maximum and the car had the pace that we missed in qualifying yesterday so it was a pretty good result. We didn't have the speed to challenge Sebastian [Vettel] today but we did have the pace to get both cars on the podium so I'm happy for the team."

 

Romain Grosjean - 3rd: "It's great to be back on the podium and it's a fantastic result for the team. It hasn't been an easy start to the season for me, but we made good progress through the weekend and are now back to where we should be. I felt much more comfortable in the car and the result today is a deserved reward for everyone after all our hard work. It was a really enjoyable race with a lot of overtaking and a couple of tense moments along the way, so to come from P11 through to the podium is really satisfying. We've had consistency already, finishing every race in the points, but now it's the big results we're chasing and this is a very good start to that challenge."

 

Eric Boullier, team principal: "Here we are again, just like in 2012! This time around though it was much more difficult - especially after a qualifying performance which fell below our expectations – but we've shown flashes of pace throughout the weekend and confirmed that speed when it mattered today. The win was not quite within our reach after the start we made, but to come away with a double podium when the top six would maybe have been a more realistic pre-race target was a great performance from everybody involved. I'm delighted for the whole team here in Bahrain and back at Enstone; it's a well-deserved result."

 

Alan Permane, trackside operations director: "Both drivers did a fantastic job today. We know our car is kind on tyres so we were able to play to those strengths and rectify the disappointment of qualifying yesterday. We chose an aggressive strategy with Romain, opting for a three-stop race from eleventh on the grid, and it worked perfectly. He was able to drive aggressively when asked and conserve his tyres when needed, so we are very happy as he delivered everything we wanted from him. With Kimi we used a two-stop strategy and relied on our long run pace. Considering he was suffering from an allergic reaction before he started the race it's a very impressive performance indeed."

Alla fine dopo le prime soste pensavo che avessero perso la ragione e invece sono arrivati secondi e terzi in una maniera quasi semplice. Chiaramente con Alonso in mezzo sarebbe stato solo un terzo posto, ma è un ottimo risultato contro super-Vettel

Molto bene anche Grosjean oggi, questa macchina va davvero bene venerdì e domenica. Peccato per il sabato.

Va molto bene la domenica, ma ho notato che va bene con tutte le gomme e in tutte le condizioni meteorologiche.

In Australia c'erano le gomme più morbide e c'era clima freddo, e in queste condizioni hanno vinto la corsa.

In Cina c'era una temperatura mediamente fresca, con gomme medie e hanno terminato secondi.

In Bahrain, con gran caldo e gomme dure, hanno piazzato entrambe le vetture sul podio.

 

Solo in Malesia la vettura è stata al di sotto delle aspettative, ma probabilmente complice un errata scelta di setup per via del meteo incerto.

Le dure condizioni in Malesia non hanno aiutato Lotus. Qual è lo stato attuale?

James Allison "Non era il risultato che volevamo, ma che è stato soprattutto perché abbiamo già perso nei primi sette turni mezzo minuto. Posso confermare che condizioni di umidità non sono la nostra forza. Siamo problemi ottenere gli intermedi nella finestra di funzionamento ottimale e per sviluppare il grip necessario. E la nostra ala posteriore non genera l'output che abbiamo bisogno di una pista bagnata. quindi dovremo lottare fino a quando abbiamo messo a punto una nuova ala con alto carico aerodinamico.

Valsecchi set for Lotus E21 aero tests

 

 

Davide Valsecchi, Lotus's third driver for the 2013 campaign, will get behind the wheel of the E21 chassis later this month, with the reigning GP2 Champion expected to complete a series of aero tests in preparation for the start of the European season.

 

The Italian completed a morning of pre-season testing in the car at the Circuit de Catalunya earlier this year when he substituted for the unwell Kimi Räikkönen.

 

"I had a seat fitting to be prepared for some aero tests later in April," explained 26-year-old Valsecchi. "It’s not quite racing, but it means I have some time in the car to get more used to the controls and of course it’s always great to work with the team.

 

"Hopefully I’ll be useful and maybe help find something to make the car even better on-track! It’s always a good feeling to be in an F1 car, so I’m looking forward to it."

 

Valsecchi travels to every Formula 1 race weekend with Lotus, acting as a backup to Räikkönen and Romain Grosjean should either of the two men suffer illness or injury.

Davide Valsecchi: “La Ferrari, macchina formidabile”

 

Il 26enne comasco – di Eupilio – spera in una chance per la stagione 2014, cercando nel frattempo di farsi trovare pronto quando necessario. Si vocifera che il pilota italiano potrebbe essere impegnato a luglio sul circuito di Silverstone per testare la E21 in vista della seconda parte di un campionato che vede Kimi Raikkonen in piena lotta per l’iride. Nulla di ufficiale, ma certamente si tratterebbe di un’occasione da sfruttare. Intanto Valsecchi ci ha rilasciato un’intervista esclusiva in cui traccia un primo bilancio sul Mondiale di F1 che, a detta dell’azzurro, vede una Ferrari con le carte in regola per puntare al titolo.

 

Partiamo dall’ultimo Gp del Bahrain. Il ‘discorso da bar’ ricorrente è stato: cosa avrebbe potuto fare Fernando Alonso senza il problema all’alettone posteriore?

“La Ferrari volava, tuttavia non sono così convinto che avrebbe vinto. Guardando l’ultimo stint, infatti, mi sono accorto che le gomme di Alonso si sono deteriorate molto, infatti è stato superato anche da Perez. Vettel, al contrario, è stato incredibile nel secondo stint. Quindi penso che Fernando se la sarebbe giocata con Kimi Raikkonen per il secondo posto“.

 

Come vedi i contendenti per la lotta al Mondiale?

“Dopo la Cina avrei detto che Alonso avrebbe dominato e mi sarei aspettato un filotto di vittorie da parte sua. Adesso, invece, penso che Red Bull e Ferrari siano sostanzialmente sullo stesso piano, ma anche la Lotus può giocarsela, non si sa mai. Bisogna essere bravi a sfruttare eventuali inconvenienti che possono sempre capitare. Però nel complesso quest’anno la Ferrari ha davvero una macchina formidabile, Alonso può davvero vincere. Anche il fatto che Felipe Massa stia andando bene ci fa capire quanto sia valida la F138. Certo, servirà quel pizzico di fortuna che sinora è mancato“.

 

Il tuo team, la Lotus, ha sin qui mostrato un passo gara importante, anche se in qualifica sovente ha denotato qualche difficoltà: puoi spiegarci il motivo?

“Questione di assetto. Considerando che dal sabato alla domenica non si può più intervenire sulla macchina, è necessario fare delle scelte. Noi puntiamo ad essere forti in gara, quindi ci sta perdere qualcosina in qualifica. E’ un po’ quanto successo sabato scorso tra Hamilton e Rosberg, dove uno aveva puntato a far bene sul giro singolo, l’altro sulla lunga distanza. Ora il prossimo obiettivo della Lotus sarà quello di migliorare nell’utilizzo delle gomme anche con temperature più basse come quelle che troveremo in Europa“.

 

Capitolo debuttanti: chi ti ha impressionato di più?

“Bianchi e Bottas. In particolare il finlandese mi ha sorpreso, sta tenendo testa ad un pilota come Maldonado che secondo me è il migliore tra le squadre di seconda fascia e non a caso lo scorso anno ha anche vinto una gara. Bianchi ha il vantaggio di essere arrivato in Formula1 già con tanta esperienza grazie ai test effettuati con la Ferrari, dunque lo vedo più preparato rispetto al compagno di squadra Chilton. Ma attenzione all’inglese, nel corso del campionato potrebbe avvicinarsi“.
