#AMuS Looking at fastest laps, Alfa Romeo is behind Renault, Toro Rosso and McLaren but according to team calculations, they are fourth behind the three top teams. "The midfield is incredibly tight," team boss Frédéric Vasseur fends off premature praise. The sector times suggest that Alfa Romeo drove the fast laps with more fuel than their direct rivals. "If we want, we can drive 1.16 times," confirms team manager Beat Zehnder. Vasseur's explanation why they went for a fast lap early on also suggests that the Sauber C38 still had a respectable amount of fuel in its tank: "At some point you'll have to drive around with 30 kilos of fuel to see how your car feels when it's lighter. It happens that the handling changes completely. You don't want to be surprised in Melbourne." The signing of Kimi Räikkönen has already paid off. Vasseur: "With his experience, he sets a clear direction and knows from the top teams which is the way to go. That helps a young team like us." Sauber took risks with an unconventional car.
