Loeb says no to Le Mans

Sebastien Loeb has turned down the chance to drive a Peugeot 908 for the factory team at this year's Le Mans 24 Hours because of the amount of time he would have to dedicate to the project.

Due to start on 12 June, this year's Le Mans is the first since 2006 not to clash with a round of the WRC, prompting speculation that sportscar racing fan Loeb would join Peugeot's squad, run by Citroen Racing boss Olivier Quesnel.

But after weighing up the demands of the Le Mans testing programme, together with his existing WRC commitments - including simultaneous test programmes for the C4 WRC and next year's DS3 - Loeb decided to park his sportscar ambitions for this year.

"I didn't want the Le Mans programme to become a constraint rather than a pleasure." Loeb wrote on his website. "Fun was why I asked to ride in the 908 in the first place. But if it becomes too much to test the C4, DS3 and the 908, then I have to focus on the main goal. Even if I would like to do everything."

A clash of test dates and a squeeze on time at home with his family were the final straws. "In fact, the decision was taken on something trivial," he explained. "We needed to move a test session with the C4 WRC, and the only date we could find was the one day I was free to go home between Rally Mexico and a Peugeot test. It was too much.

"I am still keen to drive on circuits, special stages and other places but after five weeks of tests left and right on stage and race circuit I would spend two days at home with my daughter, my wife and my friends. I am not a robot. Like everybody I need time for myself and my family.

"Sure, on one side, I am disappointed not to do Le Mans, but on another, I am happy to have a little time for me," he added. "I will have other opportunities to do the race."

After losing out to his rival Mikko Hirvonen in Rally Sweden, Loeb also acknowledged his fight for a seventh WRC title was likely to keep him busy this year.

"The rally season does not look particularly easy with Hirvonen - and things could get hot," he said. "If that means I'm 'shielded' from other races in favour of testing then okay. It’s important not to saturate and to stay focused on the essentials. There's much left in the WRC, and my life outside the WRC, too."

Raikkonen is back pain and tested Rally Mexico

Former Formula 1 world champion Finn Kimi R?ikk?nen its planned test before the Mexican Rally had to cancel. The reason for the pain back to Raikkonen recovered. The pain comes from its beginnings F1, though, in the tests with the Sauber team crashed and the pain he remained until now. "My plan was to take part in tests on gravel in order to familiarize with the Citroen C4 WRC on gravel. Unfortunately, I began to feel back pain which I did not dare to test the C4 WRC. I got drugs from Mexico but now I need rest. Of course, I wanted to test the car before the event, but health chiefs. "

"I think we can find a good grip on gravel, but I still lack experience. I just need to get more miles in the car so I could really get used to the Citroen C4 WRC and rally in general," said Raikkonen closes and feelings of the Swedish Rally " Very positive is that we in Sweden went all stages and we learned a lot. We could have done better overall outcome, but for a few minor bugs, but gradually we managed to accelerate and that was our original intention. "

Arai crashes during pre-Mexico test

The second round of the FIA World Rally Championship will officially get underway on Thursday evening, but there was drama even before the recce began for Japan?s Toshi Arai and his new British co-driver Daniel Barritt.

The pair, expected to be front-runners in the P-WRC competition, were carrying out a test with their Subaru Impreza on Monday and completed one pass of the gravel road - at an altitude of around 2000 metres above sea level - without any problems.

Arai's new co-driver Barritt later complained that there had been some interference in the intercom system, but the Japanese launched the Subaru into a high-speed roll on the second pass through the stage.

Arai and Barritt escaped injury but their car sustained damage to its front-end and roof and the test was abandoned. Arai's car was taken to a garage in Leon for emergency repairs and was returned on Tuesday afternoon. Subject to a satisfactory scrutineers' inspection, Arai is expected to start the rally on schedule.

Crews will be conclude complete their reconnaissance of the 22 gravel special stages on Wednesday, before the official shakedown and pre-event press conference take place on Thursday.

The rally begins on Thursday evening with the ceremonial start in Guanajuato - a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. Special stage action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday takes place to the north and east of Leon with the ceremonial finish scheduled for 1300hrs on Sunday afternoon.

Raikkonen's recce notes

The Corona Rally Mexico will be an entirely new experience for Citroen Junior Team driver Kimi Raikkonen. But despite the unfamiliar surroundings, the Finn thinks some of the event's gravel stages remind of his home round in Finland.

The Finn, who before this weekend had never been to Mexico, has now completed the recce of the 22 stages that make up the rally.

"The event's not exactly what I was expecting," said Raikkonen. "The stages are quite demanding and twisty, but there are also some more flowing bits that are a little similar to Rally Finland. The good news is that there seems to be a bit more consistency in the surface than there was in Sweden.

"Even in the recce car, you feel that the amount of grip doesn't vary too much. What it will be like when we come to doing the stages at full speed in the rally car, I don't really know: but there are a lot of things that I don't know about rallying yet!"

Having been forced to sit out the Citroen Junior Team's pre-event test after aggravating an old back injury picked up in F1, Kimi feels confident that it will not trouble him further during the rally.

"My back feels OK now," he said. "I'm going to wear a kidney belt - a type of back brace - during the rally just to keep everything in place but I am sure I won't have any further problems. If I was going to experience some pain I would have had it during the recce, but it was fine. I'm actually not too worried about having missed the test: the team has some very good data for this rally anyway."

One of the biggest changes that Kimi has made since Sweden is in his pace notes, read out by co-driver Kaj Lindstrom. "The level of detail in them is really good now," added Lindstrom. "Our recce was really good and I could tell that Kimi had a great feeling with the stages. I hope that all the stages are going to go well for us, but there are a quite a few that we thought might be really good such as SS3 and SS12. The roads clean up quite a lot, so I think that our start position will help us too."

After learning a lot in Sweden, the 2007 Formula 1 World Champion is planning on taking the same approach in Mexico. "Most of the speed to come is from me learning more about the car, so that is going to be the main focus here," he concluded. "We're going to just build on everything we've learned so far at our own pace, and hopefully a few good stage times will come out of it too. At the shakedown we plan to do as many runs as we can to get a feel for the roads. "
