Articolo in tedesco.

MERCEDES FUTURE: WOLFF ADMITS JOB CHANGE

Last week the Mercedes F1 team and Daimler denied our story about a possible job change and internal promotion of Toto Wolff. From his mouth it sounds completely different now.

The waves were high last week when F1-Insider.com reported about Toto Wolff's (48) future plans. Our report that he could retire from his operative position in the factory and at the track as Mercedes team boss and rise within the team organisation in a kind of supervisor role, following the example of Niki Lauda, was denied by all sides. By Mercedes AMG F1, the factory team, in other words, just like by Daimler group spokesman Jörg Howe.  "Toto Wolff is and remains our team boss," the DPA was told.

A Mercedes F1 PR man even called our story "irresponsible", according to which a partial sale of the team to a consortium around Aston Martin boss Lawrence Stroll was also in the offing. "One does not intend to withdraw from Formula 1", Daimler explained, but "the intention is to continue with the works team". A denial of an assertion that wasn't even made in the original report.

Yesterday, Toto Wolff even indirectly confirmed our report in a zoom video clip: "I have to question myself," says the Viennese. "I don't want to be a team boss who switches from great to good without realising that you might not be able to contribute as much to the team as you did at the beginning. I have the feeling that I can still contribute a lot, but of course I'm thinking about my future and I'm also discussing with Ola (Källenius, Daimler board member, editor) how that could work. We're in the middle of carving out our common future, so I don't want to be tied down to a specific title, whether that's Team Principal or Managing Director".

The Austrian is also not categorically ruling out a change in Mercedes' Formula One involvement in Formula One - contrary to what the press spokesmen's reaction last week suggested. Wolff: "The marketing value that Mercedes generates through the Formula 1 platform is enormous. Formula 1 is consolidated, we have the support, so it's not up for debate at the moment."

But he also admits: "That doesn't mean that you don't have to question this commitment anyway. In times of Corona, when the automobile industry is changing, every commitment must be discussed."

Red Bull sports director Helmut Marko also pours oil on the fire of speculation about restructuring at Mercedes that goes beyond a "right now": "Let's wait and see what developments are underway at Mercedes. There is a lot going on in terms of personnel, as we hear", he told the daily newspaper Österreich at the weekend.

Formula 1 expert Ralf Schumacher also finds it "very, very exciting" that the constellation with Wolff's connection to Lawrence Stroll and his investment in Aston Martin could open the door for a closer network between the Daimler group and the British sports car manufacturer - as we reported.

Schumi II: "The complete drive train of Aston Martin comes from Mercedes. There is a closeness that will certainly allow one or the other in the future." He therefore interprets the comprehensive Daimler denials as a statement with which "one did not block to change things a bit. Let's put it this way..."
